Setting a bedtime for children can be challenging. It’s hard to keep a set routine in today’s busy world. Parents find it difficult to be consistent when it comes to getting their children to bed at the same time every night. Working parents must find time for so many things, such as homework, sports activities, suppertime, and quality family time. With all of that, who wants to deal with a power struggle over a bedtime, right? Here are a few tips to help parents get their children to bed at a consistent time every night.

The recommendation for how much sleep a child should get varies by age. Children under the age of six should get at least eleven hours of sleep each night. Children over the age of six should get at least nine hours of sleep each night. Studies show that there’s a high percentage of children in the world today who are deprived of an adequate amount of sleep on a regular basis. Sleep deprivation can result in poor grades in school and long-term effects on a person’s health. Parents can determine a proper bedtime for their children by taking all of these facts into consideration. Stay committed to a set bedtime once it’s been established. A daily planner could be helpful for staying on schedule. Write the bedtime in the planner and allot enough time for the things that must get done before that. It’s best to start out putting children to bed at a set time when they are little. Adjust the time as they grow older. By doing this children will already have a set routine and will be accustomed to a consistent bedtime. Be firm with them. Let them know that it’s not optional. The set time will change only when the parents have determined that it will.

Parents can put their children to bed at a certain time each night, but are they really going to sleep? It might sound out of the ordinary for this day and time, but removing all obstacles that are preventing children from falling asleep is important. Toys should be in a closet away from reach. All electronic devices should be removed from the child’s room. The most common distractions that are preventing children from getting enough sleep are video games. Let children know that these things will be kept in another room for use during playtime. Keep the sleeping area as peaceful and calming as possible. Reading with your children at bedtime is recommended.

Keeping a scheduled wake-up time will help in keeping a scheduled bedtime. Write a wake-up time in the planner. Be as consistent as possible. Budgeting time is much like budgeting money. We need to spend each of them wisely. Set an alarm to go off at the same time each morning. This includes weekends. This will teach them to be responsible and self-disciplined. Studies show that keeping the same wake-up schedule on weekends makes it easier for parents to get their children to bed on time without a struggle each night.

It’s not possible to overstate the importance of instilling healthy sleep habits into children’s minds. Healthy sleep habits produce healthy children. Healthy children grow up to be healthy adults. Studies overwhelmingly show that people with healthy sleep habits are more productive. Over eighty percent of the most successful people in the world today claim to be early to bed and early to rise. Parents want to give their children every tool necessary to help them live up to their potential. All children deserve a bright future. Helping them establish healthy sleep habits is a great investment.
